How I decided
Well, "How I decided" is a very good question:
I was in Armenia for a week to conduct business meetings and in the afternoons I loved to walk on Abovyan from Sayat Nova all the way to Hrabarag and back. It's not loving the street rather the people who keep the street alive.
One afternoon as I was doing my regular walking, I saw a group of students wearing their uniforms and carrying their bags - obviously going from school back home .
I stood their and remembered my childhood... and envied them:
They learn Armenian since it's their mother language and not as a secondary language after English, French or Arabic.
For them, Hayasdan is not just a map hanging on the wall or a far dream whose flag is decorating the living room, it's their Home.
For them Ararat is not a picture in the history book or on the yearly calendar, it's there -right infront of them - everyday.
When they grow up and start dating, they wont have this feeling of guilt of going out with a non Armenian. They wont hear that question from their parents " Hye e? "
Check around Mom everybody is Hye!
Identity is very simple for them: YES HYE EM - unlike any diasporan who has a story to tell
(a canadian Armenian previously Lebanese with parents coming from Adana but now living in Dubai! )
They are growing up on their land where they have roots going back to 4000 years....
I envied them because I didnt have all these privileges but the envy turned into a promise and a decision to give my next generation what I didn't have.....

Beautifully Said and So True
With goose bumps and tears of joy, I delightfully read your post, recalling similar emotions and thoughts during my stay in Armenia.

Armenia or the Bahamas ?
The sun drenched beaches of the Bahamas or the snowy mountains of Armenia ? It really depends if you are a beach bum or avid skier. It is important to put emotion aside and find out what your comfort zone is and what you are looking for in life. A good idea is always a gradual transition. 6 months in your country of origin and 6 months in Armenia (during spring and summer) and then work in either direction. A source of income in your country of origin is critical as well. You may have to keep in mind that you are probably going to have to live on your savings for a year or more.
